Winner of the competition for the extension of the INMI Lazzaro Spallanzani, the project is conceived as a vertically articulated organism, where structural clarity and architectural expression converge.
The new building is defined by a steel exoskeleton composed of structural steel elements, working in synergy with a reinforced concrete core. This hybrid system establishes a precise dialogue between lightness and mass, where the reticular steel frame traces a permeable, rhythmic envelope, and the concrete nucleus anchors the structure with silent solidity.
Organized over one basement level and four above-ground floors, including an accessible roof, the building develops through a clear structural hierarchy. The reinforced concrete core primarily provides bracing and resistance to horizontal actions, while the steel structure efficiently carries vertical loads and shapes the architectural space.
In this interplay, structure becomes language: the steel lattice expresses tension and openness, while the concrete core embodies stability, together composing a balanced and legible tectonic system.
